Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras - Yoga Sutras by Patanjali

Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras - Eight astanga or limbs of yoga - Yoga Sutras by Patanjali

Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras to attain TRUE SELF:

Pantanjali Statue In Patanjali Yog Peeth,HaridwarImage via WikipediaPatanjali’s Yoga Sutras is a text that covers many aspects of life, beginning with a code of conduct and ending with the goal of yoga, a vision of one’s true Self. The Pantajali’sYoga Sutras is probably the most authoritative text on yoga. It defines yoga as a focusing of the attention to whatever object is being contemplated to the exclusion of all others.

Eight astanga or limbs of yoga:

Yoga isn’t only about postures, or meditation, it is a way of life, or religion. In this influencing scripture there are eight steps to awakening or enlightenment through yoga.

These eight astanga or limbs of yoga are:
  1. yamas,
  2. niyamas,
  3. asanas,
  4. pranayama,
  5. pratyahara,
  6. dharana,
  7. dhyana, and
  8. samadhi.

Yamas:

The yamas consist of lessons in moral and social conduct in our environment. It teaches us to restrain from lying, stealing, and greed. Non-violence and consideration toward all living things is the key. Communication with sensitivity towards others and moderation in all things we do is revered.

Niyama:

The niyama focuses on attitudes towards ourselves: compromising, cleanliness, serenity, devotion, and asceticism. One should study and reverence to a higher intelligence. There is an acceptance of our limitations in relation to God. It is key to have removed the impurities from the mind and body.

Asanas:

In the asanas, one focuses on posture practice, positioning the body while incorporating the breath to achieve a greater awareness in the mind. One is alert and relaxed without tension, while observing the reactions of the body and breath to various postures. This minimizes the effect of the external influences on the body, such as diet and climate.

Pranayama:

Pranayama, or the restraint and control of the breath, helps with concentration, energizing and balancing of the mind and body.

Pratyahara:

Pratyahara is the relaxation of the senses, where no distractions actually activate the mind.

Dharana, or concentration:

Dharana, or concentration, is the ability to direct the mind toward a chosen object and focus in on it alone.

Dhyana, or meditation:

Dhyana, or meditation, is the ability to develop focused interactions with what we seek to understand.

Samadhi:

Lastly, but most importantly, Samadhi is the ultimate state of Self-realization, or union with the Source.

Nadis, the meaning and functions of Nadis

Nadis, the meaning and functions of the Nadis.

The two nadis are stimulated through the practice of pranayama, which involves The word nadi comes from the Sanskrit root nad meaning "channel", "stream", or "flow". The two nadis are stimulated through the practice of pranayama.

The chakras are thought to vitalise the physical body and to be associated with interactions of both a physical and mental nature. They are considered as locations of life energy, or prana, which is thought to flow among them along pathways called nadis.

In Mysticism, a Nadi (plural: Nadis) is an energy channel in which prana energy flows and may connect chakras. Nadi is not accepted by mainstream science. The main nadis include Shushumna, Ida and Pingala.

Nadis are thought to carry a life force energy known as prana in Sanskrit, or qi in Chinese-based systems. Nadis are also said to have an extrasensory function, playing a part in empathic and instinctive responses. Nadis are sometimes viewed as extending only to the skin of the body, but are often thought to extend to the boundary of the aura.

The Ida and Pingala nadis (Ida nadi and Pingala nadi) are often seen as referring to the two hemispheres of the brain. Ida is the introverted, lunar nadi, and refers to the right hand side of the brain. Pingala is the extroverted, solar nadi, and corresponds to the left hand side of the brain.

The two nadis are stimulated through the practice of pranayama, which involves alternate breathing through left and right nostrils, which would alternately stimulate the left and right sides of the brain. The word nadi comes from the Sanskrit root nad meaning "channel", "stream", or "flow".

BE BORN ANEW - meditation technique - breathing technique

WHEN IN WORLDLY ACTIVITY, KEEP ATTENTIVE BETWEEN THE TWO BREATHS, AND SO PRACTICING, IN A FEW DAYS, BE BORN ANEW.

WHEN IN WORLDLY ACTIVITY, KEEP ATTENTIVE BETWEEN THE TWO BREATHS...

Forget breaths -- keep attentive in between. One breath has come: before it returns, before it is exhaled out, there is the gap, the interval. One breath has gone out; before it is taken in again, the gap. IN WORLDLY ACTIVITY KEEP ATTENTIVE BETWEEN THE TWO BREATHS, AND SO PRACTICING, IN A FEW DAYS, BE BORN ANEW. But this has to be done continuously. This technique has to be done continuously. That is why this is mentioned: WHEN IN WORLDLY ACTIVITY.

Whatsoever you are doing, keep your attention in the gap between the two breaths. But it must be practiced while in activity.

Now there is only this difference, that this has to be practiced while in worldly activity. Do not practice it in isolation. This practice is to be done while you are doing something else. You are eating -- go on eating and be attentive of the gap. You are walking -- go on walking and be attentive of the gap. You are going to sleep -- lie down, let sleep come, but you go on being attentive of the gap. Why in activity? Because activity distracts the mind, activity calls for your attention again and again. Do not be distracted, be fixed at the gap. And do not stop activity, let the activity continue. You will have two layers of existence -- doing and being

This technique, is just to make yourself a psychodrama -- just a play. You are focused in the gap between two breaths and life moves on, on the periphery. If your attention is at the center, then your attention is not really on the periphery -- that is just "sub-attention"; it just happens somewhere near your attention. You can feel it, you can know it, but it is not significant. It is as if it is not happening to you. I will repeat this: if you practice this technique, your whole life will be as if it is not happening to you, as if it is happening to someone else.

Thanks and Regards,

Sajith.
